Rotary Club of Canberra Meeting 16 June 2025
Jun 16, 2025 12:30 pm - 1:30 pm

On Monday we will hear from Prof. Peter Stanley, one of Australia’s leading military historians. The first and so far the only Principal Historian at the Australian War Memorial who won the Prime Minister’s Prize for Australian History in 2011. This award led to him being appointed Research Professor at UNSW Canberra, from which position he recently retired. Peter has published fifty books, fiction and non-fiction, most dealing with aspects of conflict.

Here is an introduction to his talk ......

…But what does a war historian actually do?: Reflections on a career in military history

Early in my marriage, my wife professed to be astonished that a war historian, who surely researched obscure long-ago battles, surely of interest to few, could possibly come home claiming to have been busy. ‘What could make you so busy?’, she’d ask, incredulously. After having been a military historian for over forty years, I can indeed claim to have been busy.

I’ll outline what I’ve done since starting work as a 22-year-old clerk in the History and Publications Section at the Australian war Memorial which might shed some light on what it is that military historians do. I’ve certainly been busy of the past 45 years: but doing what?

Please register as soon as possible on the link below and don't forget to hit save. Lunch will be a roast with a glass of house wine, beer or soft drink at a cost of $35

Rotary Club of Canberra Meeting 23 June 2025
Jun 23, 2025 12:30 pm - 1:30 pm

Next Monday 25 June we are very lucky to have two presentations to entertain us over our lunch.

Firstly we will hear from our Youth Exchange Student Katharina who will share her experiences from her time in Australia and what she has gained since July last year. She will also give us a taste of her cello playing. Katharina has been a member of the Canberra Symphony Youth Chamber Orchestra since July last year when she joined during her first week in the country. She will be sadly missed by that group of musicians.

Secondly, one of our members and Katharina's current and last host father, Graham Bannerman, will speak to us about his life and work.

On Monday our lunch will be Prawn Fettuccine with prawns, house smoked chorizo, garlic, sundried tomato, pitted kalamata olives, baby spinach, chilli, tomato sauce topped with parmesan.

If you have dietary requirements with respect to this meal, please let me know as soon as possible and an alternative meal will be arranged for you.

Remember that the $35 cost of this meal includes a glass of house wine, beer or soft drink.

The car park code will be  1189

Please register as soon as possible.
