On Monday 5 May we will hear from Professor Paul Kelly. He is a public health physician and epidemiologist with more than 30 years’ research experience. Professor Kelly is a former Chief Medical Officer for the Australian Government Department of Health and has spent a distinguished career dedicated to the investigation and delivery of prevention strategies and optimal clinical care, not only domestically, but also internationally in developing and under resourced nations. His expertise, leadership and advice helped Australia successfully navigate the COVID-19 pandemic — the country’s largest public health response in over 100 years. Professor Kelly’s constant presence, technical expertise, and clear communication provided reassurance to the public and critical advice to governments at a time of extreme uncertainty. Jun 16, 2025 12:30 pm - 1:30 pm
On Monday we will hear from Prof. Peter Stanley, one of Australia’s leading military historians. The first and so far the only Principal Historian at the Australian War Memorial who won the Prime Minister’s Prize for Australian History in 2011. This award led to him being appointed Research Professor at UNSW Canberra, from which position he recently retired. Peter has published fifty books, fiction and non-fiction, most dealing with aspects of conflict. Here is an introduction to his talk ...... …But what does a war historian actually do?: Reflections on a career in military history Early in my marriage, my wife professed to be astonished that a war historian, who surely researched obscure long-ago battles, surely of interest to few, could possibly come home claiming to have been busy. ‘What could make you so busy?’, she’d ask, incredulously. After having been a military historian for over forty years, I can indeed claim to have been busy. I’ll outline what I’ve done since starting work as a 22-year-old clerk in the History and Publications Section at the Australian war Memorial which might shed some light on what it is that military historians do. I’ve certainly been busy of the past 45 years: but doing what?
Please register as soon as possible on the link below and don't forget to hit save. Lunch will be a roast with a glass of house wine, beer or soft drink at a cost of $35 |

Only four people started the organisation but now more than 40 volunteers work for improving lives of vulnerable Canberrans. All volunteers offer their time and effort completely for free. Volunteers come from different origins and social backgrounds. It is kind of a United Nation of humans bound together with a single thread of love and care for those in need. HelpingACT helps all without any discrimination of colour and creed. While the main focus of helpingACT is to address food insecurity in Canberra it also works closely with homeless, refugees, asylum seekers, domestic violence affected, and disabled. HelpingACT believes in mutual existence and helps and collaborates with other charity organisations. it aims to achieve a day when no one sleeps hungry in Canberra, when no mother struggles to provide food for her children. .It provides free community dinners and lunches on weekly basis to all in need including homeless, helps refugees with their settlement, international students by providing food and holds Ramadan Dinners each year. It believes that poverty should not shadow a child’s health and education and runs a school breakfast program and provides once a week breakfast to eights schools and one college. It also works with first Australians and endeavours to promote mutual understanding between all Canberrans. As members will see, Muhammed Ali and Helping ACT are truly inspirational and a wonderful support for our community. Please come along and hear more about what they do.

Oct 27, 2025 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm
The Club's guest speaker for Monday's meeting is Professor Peter Leahy. His address to the Club will be on the topic "Headwinds for Australia’s Defence" , a very pertinent subjet at the present time. Professor Leahy will focus on the following: Overall Australia’s defence and security situation is poor and deteriorating. The Nation is in peril. The warnings are there, the risk is high and the consequences could be catastrophic. What is being done? Not enough – our defence force would struggle to meet likely tasks and we would have great difficulty in sustaining operations for even a limited amount of time. Current and near future operations are being cannibalized to fund far future expenditure. Without AUKUS there is no Plan B. As a Nation we face many headwinds. • The consequences of ignoring the risk. • How we are not being strategic. • A declining social license for defence in Australia. • A question about who will fight for Australia. The meeting will be at the Commonwelth Club and the usual dress requirements apply. Please register by 10.00am on Friday 24 October and any registrations received after that time won't be catered for unfortunately.
