RCC Lunchtime Meeting - Monday 2 February 2026
Feb 02, 2026 12:30 pm - 1:30 pm

Our Guest Speaker for Monday's meeting is Club member Jon Lane.

The theme of Jon's  talk is that universities provide research, professional training and a liberal education: the education for a free citizen — neither utilitarian nor political. Traditionally, the humanities have been the heart of higher education, but in recent decades they have been subsumed by research (discovering new knowledge) and training (skills, job readiness). It's time for a wider conversation about what higher education is, why it matters, and what we want from it.

Jon began his career as a journalist. He covered Keating's reform of industrial relations, co-authoring a booklet on Australia's first 50 Enterprise Agreements. He returned to university to train as a secondary teacher, and taught English and Drama for several years, before completing a PhD in Australian intellectual and policy history.

He then joined the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, serving in Brussels, and, more briefly, Honiara, Apia, and Santiago de Chile (virtually, during Covid). For three years he wrote speeches full time for several ministers and senior officials, including during the development and implementation of the 2017 Foreign Policy White Paper. He has been working full time on humanities policy since 2021, in the Australian Academy of the Humanities, and since August 2025 as a founding Director of Humanities for Life.

This event will be held at the Commonwealth Club and can members please register by cob Thursday 29 January to enable the Commonwaelth Club appropriate time for catering...

An extraordinary 97% of St Jude’s secondary graduates progress to higher education, many supported through the Beyond St Jude’s program, which also helps thousands of government school students each year through graduate volunteer teachers.

Gemma's topic will be - From a bold idea to a life-changing movement and thriving school. Come and hear how education is transforming lives in Tanzania.
